Unemployed Depression-era protesters in Camden, NJ still wouldn't enjoy Final Fantasy 8.

Veteran indie game designer Jeff Vogel (man, the Exile games ate up soooo many hours of mine in college) says he’s done with games where the hero you play is a joyless, unfun pill.

Hats off to you, man. This is why I can’t stand playing a lot of Japanese RPGs, for example. And it’s why games like Fallout 3 or Katamari Damacy or (here’s a personal favorite) Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge are fun. They let you play as fun people who do fun, weird, things and who demonstrably enjoy what they’re doing.

If I wanted to be an earnest do-gooder, or spend my free time around earnest do-gooders, i’d play Super Campus Speech Code RPG.
